Generating Smart Glasses-based Information Systems with BPMN4SGA: A BPMN Extension for Smart Glasses Applications
Although smart glasses allow hands-free interaction with information systems and can enhance business processes, they face problems with the adoption in businesses. Implementation challenges arise due to specific hardware conditions e.g. computational power, limited battery, small screen size and privacy issues caused by the camera. In addition, not many programmers are specialized for the development of smart glasses-based applications to conquer the mentioned challenges. We address this issue with a generation tool for smart glasses-based information systems. A BPMN extension for smart glasses applications allows the abstract specification. Specified processes are then integrated into a model-driven software development approach that transforms processes directly into smart glasses applications. This paper covers the design and development phase of the abstract and concrete syntax of the BPMN extension and the representation of the architecture to generate smart glasses-based information systems with the new developed BPMN extension
Discovering Blockchain for Sustainable Product-Service Systems to enhance the Circular Economy
An increasing amount of use cases is discovered for blockchain technology, since it promises tamper-proof recording of product-related data. It has the potential to improve the reliability of information management for whole supply chains and thus enables new ecologically and economically service offerings. Integrating products and services into one marketable bundle is no new concept and is referred to as product-service systems (PSS). Therefore, the methodical integration of knowledge on sustainable businesses, PSS and blockchain is a promising approach to overcome current barriers to achieve an applicable circular economy. Our study contributes a structured literature review on ongoing research in the field of sustainability-focused blockchain applications. From this, we elaborate a holistic perspective by the integration of key concepts from two additional literature reviews for blockchain and PSS. Asa result, we point out potential benefits and present the effect of blockchain on sustainable PSS with a product-life cycle model
How Do We Support Technical Tasks in the Age of Augmented Reality? Some Evidence from Prototyping in Mechanical Engineering
Industrial sectors like mechanical engineering currently define themselves primarily through their product business. However, a change can currently be observed. Instead of continuing to engineer products for maximum reliability, solution systems are developed that leverage their performance from services such as maintenance. For these, information supply is an essential factor, since the underlying products are becoming more complex. Additionally, these products are integrating information and communication technology, which can supply technicians, e.g. with actual condition data. To be able to use this information, technicians need service support systems (SSS) that yet exist on mobile and simple wearable devices. This article reports from the development of an SSS-based on augmented reality glasses. The developed system was used to support a LEGO assembly task and evaluated with the Task-Technology Fit model. The result shows that AR glasses can be used for the information supply of technicians but still need further development to allow for adequate service support
Heuristic Theorizing in Software Development: Deriving Design Principles for Smart Glasses-based Systems
Design knowledge on smart glasses-based systems is scarce. Utilizing literature analysis on software development publications, insights from the design and implementation of four smart glasses-based systems and expert interviews, we elicited 16 design principles to provide guidance in the development of future service support systems. Heuristic Theorizing is an abductive Design Science Research method, hitherto far too little known or little noticed, which was applied to conduct the research. We contribute to theory and practice with applicable design principles to support the development of smart glasses-based systems. Phenomena known to have an impact on the adoption of smart glasses are addressed by these design principles
Interface-induced hysteretic volume phase transition of microgels: simulation and experiment
Thermo-responsive microgel particles can exhibit a drastic volume shrinkage
upon increasing the solvent temperature. Recently we found that the spreading
of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNiPAm) microgels at a liquid interface under
the influence of surface tension hinders the temperature-induced volume phase
transition. In addition, we observed a hysteresis behavior upon temperature
cycling, i.e. a different evolution in microgel size and shape depending on
whether the microgel was initially adsorbed to the interface in expanded or
collapsed state. Here, we model the volume phase transition of such microgels
at an air/water interface by monomer-resolved Brownian dynamics simulations and
compare the observed behavior with experiments. We reproduce the experimentally
observed hysteresis in the microgel dimensions upon temperature variation. Our
simulations did not observe any hysteresis for microgels dispersed in the bulk
liquid, suggesting that it results from the distinct interfacial morphology of
the microgel adsorbed at the liquid interface. An initially collapsed microgel
brought to the interface and subjected to subsequent swelling and collapsing
(resp. cooling and heating) will end up in a larger size than it had in the
original collapsed state. Further temperature cycling, however, only shows a
much reduced hysteresis, in agreement with our experimental observations. We
attribute the hysteretic behavior to a kinetically trapped initial collapsed
configuration, which relaxes upon expanding in the swollen state. We find a
similar behavior for linear PNiPAm chains adsorbed to an interface. Our
combined experimental - simulation investigation provides new insights into the
volume phase transition of PNiPAm materials adsorbed to liquid interfaces

Linking Augmented Reality with Peer Tutoring in Vocational Learning Environments: A Multi-Agent-Based Approach
During the elicitation of vocational training processes in a consortium research project, it became clear that augmented reality (AR) is a useful learning environment. However, using AR glasses may isolate trainees in training workshops and reduce the level of collaboration. In this study, we address these potential adverse side effects with peer tutoring. More exactly, we want to initiate tutor-tutee pairs among trainees during AR-based vocational training processes. We derive design features for a multi-agent-based approach to build tutor-tutee pairs based on concepts from the literature, a technical perspective, and the consortium within a design science research approach. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to align AR with peer tutoring. With our first results, we provide a novel IT artifact in the realm of computer-supported collaborative learning in the information systems discipline. Future work can build upon these results even outside the scope of AR
